F.A.R.M. Cafe Assistant Chef


Job Description
The assistant chef will collaborate with the executive chef in the development of F.A.R.M. Cafe’s menu, which changes daily to highlight local and seasonal ingredients. They must be able to execute recipes in a timely and efficient manner to ensure meal quality. They will be responsible for daily produce orders, coordination with the Executive Chef for large food and supply orders, receiving of goods, and supply inventory. F.A.R.M. Cafe is a dynamic work environment. The assistant chef must be comfortable supervising and training volunteers/employees from a wide variety of backgrounds, lived experiences, and skill levels. Further, they must be able to oversee volunteers and ensure compliance with proper sanitation standards. The assistant chef must maintain a knowledge of the cafe, its mission, and all ongoing programs. They must be familiar with all positions of the cafe and be willing to assist, as needed, during daily service.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating with the Executive Chef and kitchen staff to develop daily menus.
  • Focusing on utilizing fresh, local ingredients while maintaining cost effectiveness.
  • Purchasing, receiving, sanitation, inventory, and overseeing all aspects of kitchen operations.
  • Volunteer and staff supervision.
  • Overseeing daily set-up, breakdown, and cleaning of kitchen and serving equipment.
  • Participating in public relations, outreach, and education events representing F.A.R.M. Cafe and its mission. This can include cooking demonstrations, tabling at farmers markets, and attending conferences.

Qualifications:

  • Serv-Safe Certification or ability to acquire certification
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population
  • Ability to lift and carry fifty pounds
  • Strong verbal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite
  • Minimum of 2+ years kitchen experience.
  • Kitchen management experience strongly preferred

Job Type: Year-round, full-time position.

Compensation: $32,000-$35,000 starting salary. Benefits include a matching simple IRA, PTO, and paid vacation following a six month probationary period.
